ried Anna Cechacek 15 Nov 1864 in Winneshiek Co. In 1875 they moved to Bruno, NE where Joseph died at age 93. Joseph and Anna had twelve children. Anton (b. 18 Jun 1845) married Helen Johannes 8 Jan 1867 in Spillville. Helen died. On 10 Nov 1868 Anton married Barbara Slepicka. They lived in Calmar, where he was a dealer in general merchandise. Anton and Barbara were the parents of two children. Anton died in Washington state. Leopold (b. 27 Jun 1847) married Eleanor Michal 9 Nov 1869 in Spillville. Eleanor died and Leopold then married Mary Fabor 7 Oct 1889. Leopold was the father of eight children. He died in St. Paul, MN. Anna (b. 17 Aug 1849) married Joseph Triska on 23 Apr 1866 in Spillville. Joseph and Anna farmed near Spillville and were the parents of eleven children. Barbara (b. 13 Jun 1856) married Karel “Charles" Andera on 19 Jan 1875 in Spillville. She died in Spillville 7 Jan 1956.

Dostal, John and Mary (Riha)

John Dostal, son of Jan and Terzie Kvapil Dostal, was born in 1842 in Kuncice, Bohemia. He married Mary Riha on 2 Apr 1866. He worked with his father as a wagon maker. While living in Spillville, they had five children: Mary, Joseph, John Anton, Katherine and James. They later moved to Manly, IA where two more children, Anna and Mayme, were born. Both John and Mary lived in Manly until their deaths. John died in 1926 and Mary in 1917. They are both buried in the Manly cemetery.

Joseph married Elfrieda Mulberry. They moved to St. Paul, MN. John Anton married Mary Kuchar. He was a butter maker in Manly. John Anton later moved to Protivin, IA where he took part in organizing the Creamery and was one of the organizers of the Bohemian Savings Bank where he was cashier until his death in 1939. Katherine married Hugh Monahan and lived at Manly. Anna married John Kuchar and also lived at Manly. Mavme married Andrew Pitzenberger. They made their home in St. Paul, MN.

Dotseth, John and Millie (Nylund)

John Dotseth was born in Valders, Norway 10 Jan 1890. He was the son of Ole Andreas and Hildegarde (Hamersburg) Dotseth. John’s brothers were: Mathias, August, Henry, Alfred, Carl, Norman and Hartvig. He also had 2 sisters, Tonetta and Anne.

John married Millie Victoria Nylund on 31 Dec 1919 at Minneapolis, MN.

Millie was born 23 Feb 1891 in Ortonville, MN. She was the daughter of Ole and Matilda (Nelson) Nylund. Her father was born 14 Mar 1862 in Varmland, Sweden. Her mother was born 26 Feb 1858 in Jarskog, Sweden. They were married in Sweden on 29 Dec 1886.

John and Millie had 4 children: John, Jr.; Raymond (died at birth 18 Jul 1923); Jean and Robert.

John owned and operated a bakery in Waukon from 1915 to 1939. John entered the service 4 Sep 1917. While he was in the service, his father and a brother ran his business. John was stationed in Lorraine, France as a baker. He left the United States 16 Aug 1918 and returned 1 Jun 1919. He was a past commander of the American Legion post in Waukon. He served on the school board for many years and was mayor from 1932 to 1936 and again from 1958 to 1962.

John bought a farm in Winneshiek Co along Highway 9 in about 1940. He moved to the farm and farmed until about 1957. John then returned to Waukon and lived in an apartment in the building he owned.

John and Millie were members of St. John’s Lutheran Church most of their lives.

John passed away 1 Apr 1973. Millie passed away 4 Jan 1983.

Dotseth, Ole and Gusta (Hamersburg)

Ole Andreas Dotseth was born 2 Jun 1862 in Toten, Norway. He immigrated to the United States from Kristinia, Norway. He came over on the vessel Majestic. Ole arrived in New York about 5 Jul 1893 and came to the Decorah area soon after that.

Ole married Gusta Hildegarde (Hamersburg) in Norway. Hilda (b. Oct 1868-d. 1935) came to America in 1893 at the age of 31. There were 2 children, Mathias and John, with Hilda when she came.

Ole and Hilda made their first home on the Canoe Valley Road. In May 1906, they bought 20 acres. To their union a total of 10 children were born. In addition to Mathias and John, there was Hartvig, Alfred, Tonetta, Ann, August, Henry, Carl and Norman. In Jan 1910 Hartvig died at the James Haugen home (Mrs. Haugen was a sister of Ole Dotseth). Some time later they moved to town and bought a bakery 4 Jun 1920.

Ole Dotseth was a baker in Norway and pursued that trade after he came to America. He was a very kind man - giving baked goods to help people less fortunate than he and preparing a large turkey or ham for the church. He enjoyed singing with the Luren Singers. He helped
